Agli esordi sembrava un uomo veloce, poi da corse a tappe (sua la Vuelta Espana 2009) e poi un collezionista di classiche (4 Liegi, 5 Freccia). Se fosse andato forte anche in alta montagna sarebbe stato Eddy Merckx. Valverde viene dalla regione di Murcia, nel sud est della Spagna e ama il sole.
